Our Salmon Oil Is MSC Certified Sustainable

Certified Sustainable Seafood MSC

It is with great honor that we get to announce that our Salmon Oil is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Certified!

MSC certified sustainable means the Alaskan salmon we use for our Salmon Oil is caught in a sustainable way, meaning we’re helping to guarantee healthy oceans and safeguarding future seafood supplies. We’re fortunate to work with a bottling company that is also MSC certified, for a full circle of sustainability.

“Since Vital Pet Life was founded, our core values have embraced the importance of sustainability and transparency. We’re thrilled to announce that our Salmon Oil comes from an MSC certified sustainable fishery ensuring it is wild, traceable, and sustainable,” says Donie Yamamoto, the founder of Vital Pet Life.

This announcement of our salmon oil’s certification is an exciting moment for Vital Pet Life’s continued commitment to sustainable practices and higher standards in the pet wellness industry.

MSC Certification

MSC certification is a way of showing that a fishery meets international best practices for sustainable fishing. Sustainable fishing means that the seafood is either caught or farmed in ways that consider the long-term vitality of the seafood and the well-being of our oceans.

MSC certification was first promoted through the sustainable seafood movement which began in the 1990s. This operation highlights overfishing and environmentally destructive fishing methods. Through a number of initiatives, the movement has increased awareness and raised concerns over the way our seafood is obtained.

Fish and seafood from certified fisheries can carry the blue MSC label, assuring customers that what they’re buying is sustainable.

Seafood products can display the blue MSC ecolabel only if that seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified against the MSC standard.

The Marine Stewardship Council is a program for wild fisheries and does not include aquaculture production.

Some types of ‘enhanced fisheries’ can be certified but there is a well-defined type of enhancement to which the MSC standard for sustainability can be applied:

  • The fishery must rely on catching fish from the wild at some stage of the process.
  • Species must be native to the geographic region of the fishery, hence our Alaskan Salmon Oil is only found in the Alaskan region.
  • To be MSC certified, the seafood may not receive any kind of enhancements to accelerate their growth or maturity.
  • Habitat can be modified but it must be able to reverse the impact the fishery has on the habitats and ecosystem.
