Remember Me Thursday: Pets in Shelters Waiting for Their Forever Home

Remember Me Thursday: Pets in Shelters Waiting for Their Forever Home

On Thursday, September 23nd, we are asking everyone to remember the pets in shelters waiting for their forever home. Too often, these animals get overlooked because people are only interested in buying a pet from a breeder or pet store. Remember Me Thursday happens every fourth Thursday in September to bring awareness to the importance of pet adoption.

Remember Me Thursday is about changing that mindset and raising awareness for the millions of animals waiting for someone to adopt them.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and 3.3 million of those are euthanized because they don't get adopted into their fur-ever home.

How Can We Help?

Remember Me Thursday

One way to reduce these numbers is by spreading awareness about the importance of spaying/neutering pets. Another is encouraging people to adopt from shelters rather than buying from breeders or pet stores.

If you're considering adding a new pet to your family, please consider adopting from a shelter! Not only will you be giving a homeless animal a loving home, but you'll also be saving more than one life. Adopting from a shelter allows you to free up space for another pet that may have been lost or given up by their owners.

Cat Adoption

Not to mention, adopting is cheaper than buying too! On average, it costs about $135 to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter, while the ASPCA estimates the first-year cost of owning a dog to be about $1300 and the first-year cost of owning a cat to be about $1000.

And when you adopt, not only are you getting a great animal companion but also supporting your local shelters and rescue groups who do incredible work every day caring for homeless animals.

On Remember Me Thursday, we remember the millions of animals who are waiting for their fur-ever home in shelters across the country. Please take some time to share your experiences with your pet adoption on social media using the hashtag #remembermethursday to help spread awareness on the importance of pet adoption.
