In honor of National Pitbull Awareness Day, we want to share some reasons why we love Pitbulls! Unfortunately, these dogs can have a bad reputation, but they are some of the most positive and loving animals. They are not bullies – they are lovers, not fighters. If you are considering adopting a Pitbull, please do your research first to learn about their personality and needs. If you already have a Pitbull in your life, give them lots of love and positive reinforcement!
History of National Pitbull Awareness Day
National Pitbull Awareness Day (NPBAD) was created to spread awareness and appreciation for bully breed dogs, commonly called "Pitbulls," and their responsible owners. We want to educate people about these misunderstood animals and help change negative perceptions and stereotypes. By creating positive experiences in our dogs' communities, we hope to restore the image of the American Pitbull Terrier.
Jodi Preis, the founder of Bless the Bullys, a Pitbull rescue and education group in middle Tennessee, started NPBAD in 2007. When they introduced the concept of having one day where there would be nationwide awareness for Pitbulls, individuals responded positively to it. They saw this as an opportunity to educate people and change mindsets about Pitbulls and bring these pooches some much-deserved positive media attention all across America on a single day.
For nearly a century, Pitbulls were known as "Nanny Dogs" because they were so reliable and gentle that parents would frequently leave their infants or young children alone while running errands.
Unfortunately, over the decades, Pitbulls have gained a reputation as being ferocious, malicious, and dangerous beasts. This image is far from the truth and is based on the actions of maligned humans rather than the animals themselves.
The Truth About Pitbulls and Why We Love Them
Pitbulls love people and children!
Pitbulls are known for their affection towards children, understanding their vulnerability, and being warmhearted companions to them. They make great family pets because they are so devoted to their family. It's always super encouraging to watch someone's reaction when meeting a loving pitbull, especially when the pitbull is better behaved and affectionate than other dog breeds they have experienced.
Pitbulls Have HUGE Personalities
Pitties make sure you never go a day without smiling. They are goofy and love to make us laugh by clowning around. They are natural entertainers, whether that's their intention or not. Their expressive faces and charming antics make them great companions. Pits are fun and playful – even as they age, they love playing around. They are extremely friendly, always wagging those big tails, and quickly bond strongly with their owners.
You'll Always Feel Their Love
Pitbulls are some of the most affectionate, loving, and devoted animals you'll ever meet. They're always bursting with energy and life, which is truly contagious. From cuddling to wiggling to giving kisses - they love showing their humans how much they care through physical touch. But that's not all; Pitbulls are also smart and very in tune with human emotion. So when you feel down or stressed, your furry friend will be right there next to you, reminding you of all the reasons why life is worth living – because everyday is a good day for them! Just take one look at those big floppy ears and a huge smile - coupled with an even bigger heart full of love - and it'll be impossible not to help but crack a smile yourself.
Loyal and Eager to Please
Pitbulls are some of the most loyal dogs you will ever meet. When you visit a shelter, they will be the first to come up and greet you with a wagging tail. All they want is a best friend, and they will quickly grant that honor to anyone who chooses them.
Very Intelligent and Very Trainable
Pitbulls are eager to please and highly intelligent; they learn new things rapidly and respond well to proper training. They need consistency, structure, and firm guidance from their owner. Provide that for them, and you will witness how much they can achieve. Pitbulls have become therapy dogs, service dogs, agility champions, search & rescue dogs, and military heroes. Pits make great listeners and, when properly trained, will astound you with their obedience skills – who knows? They might even teach you a thing or two!
National Pitbull Awareness day is a day for us to remember how much we love our Pitbulls and remind ourselves of their misconceptions. These dogs have been historically misunderstood, and it's time that we set the record straight. They are some of the most loving, loyal, and intelligent creatures on this earth - and they deserve as much love as we can give them. If you've never owned a Pitbull before, or if your perception of them comes from what you see in the media, we urge you to do one thing: get to know one. The easiest way to change your perception of Pitbulls is to get to know one. Meet a friend's dog, or visit your local shelter. Once you've seen how much love they have to offer with your own eyes, I promise you'll be just as hooked on these amazing animals as the rest of us are.
